George Robert Washington Gahagan first purchased land in Madison County in1835. The initial purchase was 4,490 acres for 15 cents per acre. Six years later they purchased an additional 4,000 acres for a mere 10 cents per acre. He built their first house in about 1849 to 1850 where he resided with his wife and eleven children. Gahagan got into the lumber business.
In 1901 a son ,William Wade Gahagan, built the second house on the homestead . The house was
full Georgian style. There is a large central hallway with the stair case rising to the second floor.
There is four rooms with entrances in the four corners of the hallway same design up stairs. The house was constructed from hand picked lumber from their sawmill operation. The lumber used was walnut, cherry, popular, maple and chestnut. All the lumber was virgin timber and virtually knot free. The house had an ell added to the rear to provide a kitchen and an additional room upstairs. This house has unbelievable mill work throughout.
The present owner, Howard Graves, bought the house from the Gahagan heirs in 1994 and resides there with his daughter Annemarie.
The house is 6 miles from Hot Springs, NC .It is located on state hwy. 208 between Greeneville, Tn and Marshall, NC ,which is the Madison County seat. The house sits on 3.73 acres and fronts 870' on the Laurel river, a beautiful trout stream that is stocked by the state.
